Plus, the unicorn platter cookie cutter set used in this tutorial, is available in our shop, making it easy to replicate these magical designs. Now let's create some magic!
Unicorn Platter Cookie Cutters
This unicorn platter cookie cutter set includes a unicorn cookie cutter, a shooting star cookie cutter, and a center circle cutter. You can purchase cookie cutters together as a set, or as a pair of cutters without the center circle.
(This is the same circle cutter used in all my platter sets, like this Bee Hive set, Spiral Platter, and Floral Wreath, etc.)
There are two sizes available. When arranged as a platter, as shown in the example picture, the platter measures:
LARGE- 12 inches in diameter.
SMALL- 9 inches in diameter.
For this tutorial, I'll be decorating the large size.
Template for the Unicorn Platter Cookie Set
To help with the decorating process, I made a PDF template of all the designs of this year's new cookie platter collection, including this unicorn cookie platter set design.
Click the link below for the downloadable template PDF file.
This file is rather large in data size. Just a warning, it might take a moment before the file opens in your browser.
If you have a Kopykake or Pico projector, just print it out (or pull it up on your mobile device) and you are good to go. For those without a projector, follow the suggested steps below by tracing the design onto the cookie with an edible food marker.
The Cookie Decorating Process
To decorate these unicorn cookies, you will need the following suggested colors:
- Pink royal icing (I mixed Wilton Rose with Americolor Electric Purple.)
- Green icing (I mixed two parts Americolor Egg Yellow with one part Mint Green.)
- Blue icing (I mixed equal parts Americolor Teal and Sky Blue.)
- Yellow icing (I mixed Americolor Lemon Yellow and Egg Yellow.)
- Purple icing (I mixed Rainbow Dust Progel Purple and Americolor Electric Purple.)
- Light Pink icing (I mixed the tiniest amount of Wilton Pink with Americolor Copper.)
- White icing (I used Americolor Bright White.)
- Black icing (I used Americolor Super Black.)
Step 1
For the shooting star cookie, begin by filling in alternate rainbow stripes. I started with filling in the pink and blue stripes. Let that icing set.
Then fill in the remaining green and purple stripes, as shown. Let this icing set up.
Step 2
Once the rainbow stripes had time to set up, finish the cookie by filling in the yellow star section.
Step 3
For the unicorn cookie, begin by filling in the white unicorn head section. then fill in alternating hair sections, as shown. Let this icing set.
Step 4
Next, fill in the green and purple hair sections.
Then add the white eyelid and alternating sections of the yellow horn.
Step 5
Finish the cookie by adding remaining horn sections, and the eyelash, hair, and face outlines.
Step 6
For the center circle cookie, flood the entire cookie with white icing. Let this icing dry complete overnight.
To add the message, I used the "Happy Birthday to You" cookie stencil in our shop. I swiped stiff pink icing over it to apply the message design.
Unicorn Cookie Platter Video Tutorial
The steps above are summarized in the time-lapsed video below.
Here is the completed unicorn and shooting star cookie platter all assembled. To create this entire platter required 11 cookies-- 5 unicorn cookies, 5 shooting star cookies, and 1 center circle cookie.
This is the large, 12" version. For the tray it's on, I like to use the 12" pizza pans from Dollar Tree. They are cheap and sturdy for transporting around.
