Royal Icing Graduating Star Cookies for Graduation
Graduating from grade school is a significant milestone in a child's life, and what better way to celebrate than with a batch of delicious star-shaped cookies? With a little bit of creativity and some royal icing, you can transform simple sugar cookies into a festive treat that is sure to impress. In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of decorating a graduating star cookie using royal icing, so you can make a memorable treat for your child's graduation day. Let's get started!
Graduation Star Cookie Cutter
The graduation star cookie cutter was just added to the shop for the upcoming graduation season.
It's available in a number of sizes but for this tutorial I'll be decorating the LARGE size.
Templates for the Graduating Star Cookie
To help with the decorating process, I made a PDF template available for the new graduation cookie designs, including this star cookie.
You can download these cookie templates HERE.
If you have a Kopykake or Pico projector, just print it out (or pull it up on your mobile device) and you are good to go. For those without a projector, follow the suggested steps below by tracing the design onto the cookie with an edible food marker.
The Cookie Decorating Process
For these Graduating Star cookies, you will need the following suggested colors:
- Yellow royal icing (I mixed equal parts Americolor Egg Yellow with Americolor Lemon Yellow.)
- Red icing (I used Americolor Super Red.)
- Pink icing (I used a tiny amount of Americolor Super Red.)
- White icing (I used Americolor Bright White.)
- Black icing (I used Americolor Super Black.)
Step 1
Begin by filling the mouth area and the lower part of the grad cap in black icing. Let that icing set.
Then move on to filling in the yellow star sections. Fill in around the eye areas, as shown.
Step 2
Once the yellow had time to dry, add the white diploma, the red lower tassel, and the top of the grad cap. Also, add the eyes with black icing and then immediately add the white shine dot accents.
Lastly, add the pink tongue, the top of the tassel ball, the band around the diploma, and outlines for the grad cap.
Graduating Star Cookie Video Tutorial
The steps above are summarized in this time-lapsed video I put together.
Here are the finished graduating star cookies. Along with the stars, I also whipped up coordinating graduation cap cookies. The stencil for the "congrats" made making those cookies a breeze!
