How to Make Mother Duck Cookies
It's funny how things evolve when designing for cookies.
I fully intended to make Mother Goose cookies for the spring season and Mother's Day coming up. However, come to find out, geese have too long of a neck. This created a problem when handling a possible cookie design. The long necks are thin, making the cookie shape fragile and easy to break. So, to redesign for a sturdier cookie, I switch out the goose idea for a duck. That's how these Mother Duck cookies came to be.
Mother Duck & Duckling Cutter Set
This Mother Duck and Duckling cookie cutter set includes one Mother Duck in a bonnet and one duckling cookie cutter.
When assembled as a set of one mother with 3 ducklings cookies, the 4-piece set will fit in this BRP long cookie box (12″ x 5″ x 1.5″). An example of this set is at the end of this post.
Template for the Mother Duck & Duckling Cookies
To help with the decorating process, I made a PDF template of all of the new Easter cookie cutters, including this mother duck and duckling cookie set design.
You can download all the 2021 Easter cookie templates HERE.
If you have a Kopykake or Pico projector, just print it out (or pull it up on your mobile device) and you are good to go. For those without a projector, follow the suggested steps below by tracing the design onto the cookie with an edible food marker.
The Decorating Process
For this Mother Duck cookie, you will need the following suggested colors:
- Light blue royal icing (I mixed equal parts Americolor Sky Blue with Americolor Wedgewood.)
- White icing (I used Americolor Bright White.)
- Black icing (I used Americolor Super Black.)
- Pink icing (I used one small drop of Rainbow Dust Pink. A little goes a long way.)
- Orange icing (I used Americolor Orange.)
Step 1
Begin by filling in the white body sections. Let this icing set up (about 15 minutes.)
Then move on to filling in the blue bonnet sections and the orange beak and feet.
Step 2
Next, add the pink band of the bonnet and the center bow knot. Let this icing set again.
Then fill in the wing ends of the bow with pink icing.
Step 3
Time to add the final outline details.
Outline around the body, and add tail feathers and a wing with white icing. Outline around the bow with pink icing. Outline the bonnet with blue icing. And finally outline the beak and smile with orange icing.
Add an eye with black icing.
Video Tutorial
The decorating steps above are summarized in this time-lapsed video below.
As mentioned above, these mother duck cookie is just one of two designs in this set. Here the mother along with her ducklings.
I don't have a tutorial for the duckling cookie, however the decorating steps are very similar to the mother duck.
For a gift box option, you can fit 4 cookies (3 ducklings and 1 mother duck) in this BRP long cookie box (12″ x 5″ x 1.5″).
It's a cute display of ducks in a row following their momma.
