Decorate Cute Valentine's Pun Cookie Sets- Otter and Pickle
Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to share a little sweetness with a side of humor! In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to decorate two adorable Valentine’s pun cookie sets: an otter cookie with a heart that says, “There’s no OTTER like you,” and a pickle cookie paired with a heart that says, “You PICKLE my FANCY.”
These playful designs are sure to bring smiles to anyone who receives them! To make decorating easy, I’ve created cookie cutters and stencils for both sets, available in my shop. Whether you’re a seasoned cookie decorator or just starting out, these step-by-step instructions will help you create punny Valentine’s treats that are as fun to make as they are to share!
Valentine Puns Otter & Pickle Cookie Cutters
Just added to the shop for the upcoming Valentine's Day season are these Otter cookie cutter, Pickle cookie cutter, and Conversation Heart cookie cutter.
The pair with the Heart will fit in this BRP cookie box (7" x 4 3/8" x 1.25").
The cookies I'm decorating in this tutorial are the LARGE size.
Cookie Templates for These Valentine Pun Cookies
To help with the decorating process, I made a PDF template available for these cute pun cookie sets.
You can download these cookie templates HERE.
If you have a Kopykake or Pico projector, just print it out (or pull it up on your mobile device) and you are good to go. For those without a projector, follow the suggested steps below by tracing the design onto the cookie with an edible food marker.
The Cookie Decorating Process
Decorating cookies always starts with a good royal icing recipe. This is the royal icing recipe that I always use.
For these pun pair cookies, you will need the following suggested colors:
- Red royal icing (I used Americolor Super Red.)
- Dark Brown icing (I mixed Americolor Chocolate Brown with Super Black.)
- Tan icing (I mixed the Dark Brown icing above with white icing.
- Black icing (I used Super Black.)
- Pink icing (I used Rainbow Dust Pink.)
- Green icing (I mixed Americolor Leaf Green and Egg Yellow with a touch of Dark Brown icing.)
- Light and Dark Green icing (I did different concentrations of the Green icing above.)
Decorating the Otter Cookie
Step 1
Begin by filling in the tan belly, brown ears, and brown tail sections, as shown. Let this icing set.
Then add the two-tone head and lower legs.
Step 2
Next, add the tan snout and center red heart details.
Once that sets, move on to adding the black nose, eyes, and two remaining arms.
Step 3
Add the finishing details like the tan lower chin, the brown body outlines, and the eyebrows with a black food pen.
Step 4
For the coordinating heart message cookie, begin by flooding the entire cookie with red icing. Let this icing dry completely.
Then I used the There's no OTTER like you! cookie stencil with super thick white icing. I used a Stencil Genie to hold the stencil in place while I swiped icing over the design.
Decorating the Pickle Cookie
Step 1
Begin by filling in the body area (except for the eye holes) with green icing. Then quickly add the pink cheek dots, and random light and dark green dots. Let this icing set.
Next, add the black icing eyes, and add random green dots on the body of the pickle and along the edge.
Step 2
Lastly, draw on the smile and eyebrows with a black food pen.
Step 3
For the coordinating heart message cookie, begin by flooding the entire cookie with red icing. Let this icing dry completely.
Then I used the You PICKLE my FANCY! cookie stencil with super thick white icing. I used a Stencil Genie to hold the stencil in place while I swiped icing over the design.
