As a follow-up to the taco cookies in my previous post, I made these margarita cookies. You can't have tacos without margaritas, am I right? (At least that's what I tell people, and there's usually no argument when I do.)

There's one thing special about these margarita cookies I think you're going to like.

With most drinking glass cookies, they tend to be frail where the stem connects the cup to the base. However, with these margarita cookies, I tried to prevent that weak spot by tilting the perspective of the design. The base now butts right under the cup, making the silhouette pretty thick and sturdy.

That being said, I'm hoping theses cookies will hold up well at your next fiesta. Or in this case, Valentine's Day.

Margarita Cookie Cutter

In the shop, you can find this new margarita cookie cutter design.

This cookie cutter comes in a number of different sizes. However, for this tutorial, I’ll be decorating the LARGE-sized cookie.

Template for the Margarita Cookies

To help with the decorating process, I made a PDF template of all the designs of my 2019 Valentine’s Day cookie collection, including this margarita cookie design.

Click the link below for the downloadable template PDF file.

This file is 3 pages long and is rather large in data size. Just a warning, it might take a moment before the file opens in your browser.

If you have a Kopykake or Pico projector, just print it out (or pull it up on your mobile device) and you are good to go. For those without a projector, follow the suggested steps below by tracing the design onto the cookie with an edible food marker.

The Decorating Process

For these margarita cookies, you will need the following suggested colors:

Step 1

For those without a projector, mark the guidelines where the liquid and the lime should be, as shown. I made a template with template plastic from the PDF file above and used a food marker to draw the guidelines on the cookie.

Step 2

Begin by outlining the edge of the margarita glass, as shown, with gray icing and a #2 icing tip. Let that set for about 10 minutes.

Then, fill the cup area with the margarita green icing. Immediately add two pink cheek dots. Let this icing set up for about 20 minutes.

Step 3

Next, fill in the remaining glass sections with white icing. Be cautious to try to not cover up too much of the gray outline.

For the lime detail, fill in the circle with lime green icing. Then immediately pipe a white ring around the circle. Using a toothpick or a scribe, drag lines into the middle of the circle to create citrus wedges.

Step 4

Lastly, add the finishing touches. Use black icing to add the eyes and the smile.

For the "salted" rim, pipe a rim hoop at the top of the glass with white icing. Then pour white sanding sugar over the wet icing.

Video Tutorial

The steps above are summarized in the time-lapsed video below.

These margarita cookies and their taco cookie pals are the perfect gift for anyone that appreciates Mexican cuisine and a fun night on the town. I mean, I'm getting thirsty just looking at them. :-P

Like I mentioned in my previous taco cookie post, the sizes of these cookies in these example photos are all LARGE sizes. They will fit as a trio in new BRP long cookie box (12″ x 5″ x 1.5″) or as a single cookie favor in this 4″ x 4″ gift box.

Smaller sizes are also available if that's more your style.
