How to Make Dinosaur Heart Cookies
Continuing on with more tutorials from our latest Valentine's Day collection, here are some cute Dinosaur Heart cookies that can be personalized.
For those dino-lovers in your life, these cookies are of a T-Rex dinosaur holding a large heart design. There's plenty of space on the heart to add a name of the recipient. Or, instead of a name, a pun phrase could be added like "You make my heart Rowr!" or maybe "You are Dino-mite!"
Here's how you can make these dinosaur heart cookies for yourself.
Dinosaur Heart Cookie Cutter
Just added to the shop is this new dinosaur with heart cookie cutter.
This cookie cutter comes in two different sizes. However, for this tutorial, I’ll be decorating the LARGE-sized cookie.
Templates for the Dinosaur Heart Cookies
To help with the decorating process, I made a PDF template of all the new Valentine's Day cookie cutter designs, including this dinosaur heart cookie.
Click the link below for the downloadable template PDF file.
If you have a Kopykake or Pico projector, just print it out (or pull it up on your mobile device) and you are good to go. For those without a projector, follow the suggested steps below by cutting out the template and tracing the design onto the cookie with an edible food marker.
The Decorating Process
For these Dinosaur Heart Cookies, you will need the following suggested colors:
- Green flood icing (I mixed Americolor Egg Yellow and Americolor Mint.)
- Darker Green piping icing (I mixed the Green icing above with a touch of Americolor Leaf Green.)
- Valentine Red icing. (I used Americolor Tulip Red.)
- Black icing (I used Americolor Super Black.)
- White icing (I used Americolor Bright White.)
Step 1
For those without a projector, begin by making a guideline for where the heart and face sections should be. I made a template with template plastic from the PDF file above and used a food marker to draw the guideline on the cookie.
Step 2
Begin by filling in the lower heart area. Let the icing set for 15 minutes.
Then fill in the top head area, as shown. I filled the lighter jaw area first, then quickly filled the darker green on top. Add the accent dots while the darker green icing is still fresh and wet.
Step 3
Next, add the eye with white and black icing. Also, pipe the middle fingers of the bottom of the heart.
After the fingers had time to set, add the remaining outer fingers.
Step 4
Lastly, add the final line details on the head, as shown. Finish the dinosaur by adding the teeth and the finger nails.
Outline around the heart for definition.
Step 5
Complete these dinosaur heart cookies by adding a personalized name to the heart.
Video Tutorial
The steps above are summarized in the time-lapsed video below.
Just as mentioned before in my corgi cookies post, here are a few suggested gift box options:
For the REGULAR sized cookie (which is 3.5" in size), the 4"x4" gift box would be perfect.
For the LARGE sized cookie (which is 4" in size), these 5"x5" boxes would most likely be ideal.
