How to Make a Stackable Backpack Cookie Set
Back-to-School season is just around the corner. If you're looking for an adorable cookie set to celebrate a kid's first day, this stackable backpack cookie set might be the perfect gift.
This set is a 4-piece cookie puzzle, with each cookie depicting school supplies flying out of a backpack. There's a stack of notebook paper, two books, and a backpack at the bottom.
Now, on to the tutorial. This post is a long one, so I'll get right to it. Here's the detailed tutorial for each of the four pieces for this stackable backpack cookie set.
Backpack Cookie Cutter Set
This stackable backpack cookie set comes in 4 pieces, each a different design of the backpack set.
This set is available in various sizes.
- The LARGE cookie set will fit in this BRP long cookie box (12″ x 5″ x 1.5″).
- The REGULAR cookie set will fit in this BRP cookie box (9.5" x 6" x 1.5").
- The MINI cookie set will fit in a cellophane bag sleeve (11" x 3").
For this tutorial I'll be decorating the LARGE size, however the REGULAR and MINI size examples are also shown at the end of this post.
Template for the Backpack Cookie Set
To help with the decorating process, I made a PDF template of all of the new Back-to-school cookie cutters, including this backpack design.
You can download all the 2021 Back-to-School cookie templates HERE.
If you have a Kopykake or Pico projector, just print it out (or pull it up on your mobile device) and you are good to go. For those without a projector, follow the suggested steps below by tracing the design onto the cookie with an edible food marker.
The Decorating Process
For this backpack cookie set, you will need the following suggested colors:
- Blue royal icing (I mixed Americolor Sky Blue with Turquoise.)
- Light Blue icing (I mixed the blue above with more white icing.)
- Black icing (I used Americolor Super Black.)
- White icing (I used Americolor Bright White.)
- Green flood icing (I mixed equal parts Americolor Egg Yellow and Americolor Mint.)
- Red medium icing (I used Americolor Tulip Red.)
Step 1
For the top notebook paper, begin by flooding the right side of the cookie with white icing. Once that sets, fill in the left side.
Let this icing dry for at least an 8 hours.
Step 2
Next, draw in the paper lines with blue and red food pens. I like to use the Rainbow Dust brand of pens.
Then add a face and outline the edge of the paper pages to finish the design.
Step 3
For the top book cookie, begin by filling in the cover section. Let that icing dry.
This is optional, but I airbrushed a polka dot pattern for added interest.
Step 4
Next, fill in the spine area and the white pages section.
Add a face and then outline the cover edge for dimension.
Step 5
For the lower book, it follows the same steps as the book above. Begin by filling in the cover section and then airbrush a design if desired.
Step 6
Next, fill in the spine area and the white pages section.
Add a face and then outline the cover edge for dimension.
Step 7
For the bottom backpack cookie, start by filling in the large bag area with blue icing, as shown.
Then add a pocket and shoulder strap with light blue icing.
Step 8
Add the final details like the face, a pocket zipper, and then outline the bag edges.
Video Tutorial
The steps above are summarized in this time-lapsed video I put together.
Below is the completed backpack cookie set. Just a reminder, this is the LARGE size. It fits nicely in the BRP long cookie box (12″ x 5″ x 1.5″), shown in the photo below.
If you would like something a little smaller in scale, there's a REGULAR size option as well. Shown below, it fits comfortably in this BRP cookie box (9.5" x 6" x 1.5").
The Mini cookie set will fit in 3" x 11" cellophane bag sleeves.
For the mini cookie set, the cellophane bag always leaves a glossy glare in my photos. So, below is a shot of the cookie pieces outside of the bag for a better, unobstructed view.
