Out of all the new Easter cookie cutter designs, the cottontail bunny cookies are probably my most favorite.

With its sprinkled-filled tail detail and side-profile smile, not only are these cottontail bunny cookies easy to recreate, they pack a punch of personality as well. If you're looking for a cute treat that's quick to decorate, these bunnies might be the perfect option to offer for your upcoming Easter celebrations.

Cottontail Bunny Cookie Cutter

You can find this cookie cutter in my shop under the description of “cottontail bunny cookie cutter.”

This cookie cutter was designed to be sturdy. The “ears” of the bunny were designed downward and close to the body to make the cookie durable if shipped and handled.

For this tutorial, I’ll be decorating the LARGE-sized cookie. Smaller size options are available too if you prefer a more petite cookie.

Template for the Cottontail Bunny Cookies

To help with the decorating process, I made a PDF template of all the designs of my 2018 Easter cookie collection, including this cottontail bunny cookie design.

You can download the new 2018 Easter cookie templates HERE.

If you have a Kopykake or Pico projector, just print it out (or pull it up on your mobile device) and you are good to go. For those without a projector, follow the suggested steps below by tracing the design onto the cookie with an edible food marker.

The Decorating Process

What I love most about these cottontail bunny cookies is they don't require a ton of different colors to mix. All you need is a lot of brown icing, with pink, teal blue, and black icing for accent colors.

For the exact colors I used and how I mixed them, check out this post on a bright and cheery Easter color palette.

Step 1

For those without a projector, begin by making a guideline for where the head and ear sections should be. I made a template with template plastic from the PDF file above and used a food marker to draw the guideline on the cookie.

Step 2

First outline and flood the inner ear section with pink icing. (I like to apply just a thin layer for this section for depth and dimension.) Then outline and fill the bottom body area.

Once the body area had time to set, go ahead and fill the rear ear section.

Step 3

Next, outline and fill the remaining head section. Let the icing set for about 20 minutes.

Once the base layer had time to set, add the eye and nose detail, as well as the ends of the bow tie as shown.

Step 4

When the bow tie ends had time to set, add the center dot detail.

Then, add the outline details around the head and body (I used a #1.5 PME tip for the outlines.)

Do the same process for the bow tie outline details. Let the entire cookie completely dry (1-2 hours) before moving on.

Step 5

The last step is my favorite part.

After the icing had time to dry, add a circle of medium to stiff consistency white icing to the bunny.

Next, I like to use Sugarbelle’s method of sprinkling over wax paper for easy cleanup. (Another tidy alternative method is to use a coffee filter).

Sprinkle white non-pareils over the wet icing. Once covered in sprinkles, lift and gently shake off the excess.

Video Tutorial

The steps above are summarized in this time-lapsed video I put together.

If you would like to make these cottontail cookies cookies as gifts, I recommend the LARGE size cookie cutter.

The LARGE-sized cookies fit well as part of a 2-piece set or as a single gift favor. For 2-cookie gift sets, these 7″ x 4.25″ gift boxes from BRP Boxshop are my go-to boxes. For a single cookie favor, I love these 4″x 4″ all-clear boxes or 4″x 4″ sleeve boxes from ClearBags.com.

As shown above, I paired the cottontail bunny with the newly available plaque in my shop, the spring plaque cookie cutter.
