How to Make Fairytale Castle Cookies
Have ya'll been watching Game of Thrones? I've been on this fantasy high ever since the recent sixth season started. If, in the small chance, you are one of the few people of this world not gleefully aboard the Daenerys dragon ride to Awesomeville, let me just tell you. It's. So. Good.
No spoilers, but the horse battle scene in the last episode inspired this next batch of cookies I made. Knight and Princess themes have always been timeless choices for kid parties. I wanted to design cookies for both themes, with a few overlapping designs that use the same cookie cutters for convenience. In this round of new cookie cutters I added to the shop, I came up with a design for castle cookies that could easily work for both Knights and Princesses.
Castle Cookie Cutter
I added five new cookie cutter designs to the shop, one of them being this castle cookie cutter. The design incorporates the jagged rooftops into one solid cookie piece for stability, while giving the appearance of separate building pieces. I'll show you how I decorated these castle cookies in the steps below.
Template for the Castle Cookies
As you read on, you'll notice I made two batches of cookies: one for a knight set and one for a princess set. I provided two downloadable templates for the design ideas shown below. In knight-themed template file, I've included designs for the castle, knight helmet, horse, and shield. In the princess-themed template file, you can find the castle design again, as well as designs for the crown, princess wand, and princess horse.
You can download the KNIGHT cookie templates HERE.
You can download the PRINCESS cookie templates HERE.
If you have a Kopykake or Pico projector, just print it out (or pull it up on your mobile device) and you are good to go. For those without a projector, follow the suggested steps below by cutting out the template and tracing the design onto the cookie with an edible food marker.
The Decorating Process
These castle cookies can be decorated in whatever color scheme you would like. In this tutorial, I used royal blue, yellow, and gray colors for my knight set. However, if you read further below I also show how you can modify the colors for a princess theme, as well.
Step 1
Begin by marking where the outlines of the rooftops, the windows, and the door should be. I made a castle template from plastic using the template file above and used a food marker to draw the guideline on the cookie.
Step 2
Next, outline and fill the rooftop sections with blue royal icing. Be sure to cover a little more of the bottom edge with icing. You'll see why in Step 4.
Then, outline and fill the window sections with black icing, and the door section with light brown icing. Let this icing set for about 15 to 20 minutes.
Step 3
After the icing had time to set and crust over, add the vertical turret sections with light gray icing. Make sure to go around the windows carefully. Let this icing set again for about 15 minutes before moving on.
After the light gray icing is set, add the lower wall sections with darker gray icing. Again, be careful as you fill in around the door.
Step 4
Next, add the decorative tops to the turrets with light gray icing. Make sure you pipe over the blue to create dimension.
Then, add the similar tops to the tops of the lower walls with darker gray icing. Let everything dry for about 1 hour before moving on.
Step 5
Lastly, add the final details. Add the waving flags with yellow royal icing, the window ledges with blue royal icing, and draw in the wood lines on the door with a food pen. I used a Rainbow Dust food pen in the coffee color.
Video Tutorial
These steps are summarized in the time-lapsed video below.
As mentioned before, I added four additional cookie cutter designs to accompany this castle cookie.
For the knight's theme, I decorated a shield emblem, as well as a knight's helmet. You might notice that the knight's horse is actually a modified version of my the unicorn design from a couple months back.
I also wanted to include the castle design in a princess-themed set, as well. I reused the unicorn cookie cutter again for a princess' horse, and added a simple crown and a whimsy princess wand cookie to complete the set.
I hope you enjoyed these themed cookies. And I hope you are sharing my excited anticipation of watching the last episode of Game of Thrones airing tomorrow night. I can't wait!
