It's odd to admit, but Valentine's Day is one of my favorite times of the year. Not the actual holiday per se, but the opportunity to make cookies for the occasion. You see, I find it fun to come up with creative puns for Valentine's Day and transform them into cookie form. It's sort of a tradition of mine. Often times I go overboard (see these Star Trek "Beam Me Up, Hottie" cookies, for example). It's all in good fun and is sure to make anyone laugh.

This year I wanted to show you how to make cute ice cream cone cookies for that special someone who makes you "melt".

Ice Cream Cone Cookie Cutters

For this tutorial, I'm using the ice cream cone cookie cutter available in my shop. For sweets and giggles, there's a soft serve version available, as well. The decorating technique I'm about to show you can also be applied to any other ice cream cookie cutter you may already own.

Template for the Ice Cream Cone Cookies

I provided a downloadable template for the design ideas shown below. In the template file, I've included a "straight-ahead" version of the cone, a soft serve ice cream cone design, and an ice cream cone couple for Valentine's Day.

You can download the ice cream cone cookies template HERE.

If you have a Kopykake or Pico projector, just print it out (or pull it up on your mobile device) and you are good to go. For those without a projector, follow the suggested steps below by cutting out the template and tracing the design onto the cookie with an edible food marker.

The Decorating Process

The steps below show a pretty general way of decorating an ice cream cone you can use all year round. Alternatively, afterwards I also provide a video on how you can alter these steps to use for Valentine's Day ice cream cone couple set. Let's get started!

You will need:

Step 1

Begin by outlining and then flooding the top ice cream section with mint green icing, as shown below. Let it set for about 15 minutes.

Step 2

Next, with light brown icing, outline and flood the bottom cone section. Let it the entire cookie dry for about an hour.

Step 3

After the base layer had time to dry, add the fudge topping detail. Outline drips and then fill the middle will fudge colored icing. Let it set for about 15 minutes.

Step 4

Next, with red icing, add a ball detail at the very top for the cherry. Let it set for 15 before adding the stem detail with light brown icing.

Step 5

Now it's time to add the facial details. I went with the my normal, go-to smiley face but feel free to use one of your own liking.

Lastly, add the waffle detail. For simplicity sake, I went with drawn lines with a brown edible food marker. Piping lines of icing would work just as well.

Here's the finished ice cream cone cookie together with the rest of his ice cream buddies. Like I mentioned before, you can find this ice cream cone cookie cutter, as well as the soft serve version in my shop.

Valentine's Day Ice Cream Cookies

Here's a video that summarizes the steps above. However, there's a "twist" to the design for Valentine's Day. I added the face so it looks left, longingly into the eyes of another ice cream cone. I figured it would make a cute set of ice cream cone cookies to give to anyone that melts your heart.

To complete the set, I added a plaque with phrase "You Make Me Melt". If you're interested, the fonts I used were Rockwell for the top, and Lobster 1.4 for "Melt".
