Star Trek Valentine Cookies and Giveaway

Written by Mike Tamplin Jan 31, 2013

I have some exciting news! I’d like to share two things with you that I love dearly— geeky cookies and giveaways. I’ll get to the giveaway in a moment, but let me first show you the cookies I made this week.

The cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation

These Star Trek themed cookies were inspired by this cake by Notorious Cupcakes. I loved the simple uniform design. Bonus points for being a design from my favorite Star Trek series, The Next Generation. If you’re not familiar with this Star Trek series here’s a picture for reference.

I made that cake into cookie form with a few minor tweaks. Here’s how…

How to make Star Trek Valentine Cookies

What you will need:

  • Heart-shaped cookie

  • Black colored piping and flood icing

  • Red, Blue, or Green mustard colored piping and flood icing (this example uses red)

  • Gold 20-second icing*

  • Grey 20-second icing*

20-Second Icing*

20-second icing is a medium consistency of icing. If you run a knife through it, the line it makes fades away in 20-seconds.

  1. 1

With black piping icing, draw a straight line across the heart about 1/3 from the top of the cookie. Finish outlining the top of the cookie. Make note of the little notch right in the middle for the collar. Also, outline the pointy accent at the bottom of the heart.

  3. 2

Flood those sections with black flood icing and leave it to set for a while. (about 1 hour)

  4. star trek cookie steps 3 and 4
  5. 3

Outline and flood the remaining section with the uniform color.

  6. 4

Add the black collar line detail with a #1.5 tip. Let it dry completely. (at least 8 hours)

  7. royal icing transfers
  8. 5

While the cookie is drying, make royal icing transfers of the chest communicator insignias. I found an image online and printed out a number of them on paper. Then on wax paper, I piped the insignias using gold and gray 20-second icing. Leave to dry completely.

  9. 6

The next day, I added gold rank dots to the collar and attached the emblem transfers to the chest area using royal icing.

I made these uniform hearts in each Starfleet color.

For a little flair, I made one cookie with Worf’s baldric. (“bal-what?” It’s his metal warrior sash.) It may be a little difficult to detect from the pictures, but I painted luster dust on the insignias and this sash for a little metallic shine.

Now, Valentine’s Day would not complete without corny love notes (and puns). I came up with four of them.

phasers set to stunning cookie and number one

“Set phasers to stun” was a common saying in all the Star Trek series. I had to add a twist and include it in this set. For the other cookie, Captain Jean-Luc Picard always called First Officer William Riker “Number One”. I showcased Riker’s iconic beard and nickname on this one.

borg heart & beam me up hottie

The Borg was a neat alien race on the show. I made a Borg-assimilated heart along with a spin on their catchphrase, “Resistance is futile.” The last design isn’t technically from The Next Generation, but I included it anyways because it’s fun. I tried to resemble a man being teleported by using disco dust and luster dust. The execution wasn’t exactly what I had in mind but I think it still works.
