I think every cookier in the the world had a fangirl freak out when it was announced earlier this year that Callye, a.k.a. Sweet Sugarbelle, was going to release her own brand of cookie cutters. If you were one of the lucky ones to snag yourself Callye's Shape Shifter Decorating Cookie Set, you probably already enjoyed recreating the fun ideas she jam-packed in that kit.

If, by chance, you weren't able to find the Sweet Sugarbelle cookie cutters online, well you're in luck! The Sweet Sugarbelle collection will be available in select Michaels stores on August 19th!

The Sweet Sugarbelle Shape Shifter Cookie Decorating Set

If you're still in the dark as to what is a Shape Shifter Decorating Cookie Set, let me fill you in. Callye created a unique set of cookie decorating supplies that allow you to easily create professional looking cookies. This Shape Shifters set also allows you to create dozens of different cookie designs with just a few basic shapes. The kit includes templates that are so easy to use and help guide you through the decorating process.

I had a chance to play with the cutters in this kit, and I was giddy from start to finish. The cutters are a great quality and I love the size and scale of each one.

The set I made recently with Callye's cutters was for Back to School. It was hard to choose which cutters to pick from, but I decided on the chubby heart, the stubby pencil, and the symmetrical flip flop (which I'll explain in a minute).

Decorating Apple Bookworm Cookies

For this post, I want to show you how to reuse the flip flop cookie cutter to create a fun bookworm just hanging out in an apple design.

Apple Bookworm Cookie Template

Just like in Callye's kit, to help guide you through the decorating process, I'm providing a PDF template of the apple bookworm cookies shown below.

You can download the apple bookworm cookie template HERE.

If you have a Kopykake or Pico projector, just print it out (or pull it up on your mobile device) and you are good to go. For those without a projector, follow the suggested steps below by cutting out the template and tracing the design onto the cookie with an edible food marker.

The Decorating Process

You will need the following suggested colors:

Step 1

Begin by marking where the outline of the apple should be. I made an apple template from the template file above and used a food marker to draw the guideline on the cookie.

Step 2

Next, outline over the guideline with red royal icing, then fill in the middle area. Let this icing set and dry for about 1 to 2 hours.

Step 3

Once the apple section had time to dry, pipe the outline of the bookworm using a #2 tip and dark green icing. Let it set for about 5 minutes.

Next flood the sections in alternating order with light green icing. I started with the head and worked my way through the body. Fill every other body section and let the icing set (about 10 minutes) before filling the remaining body sections. Let this icing set and dry for another 1 to 2 hours.

If you get light green icing over the outline, it's okay. You can go over the outline again once the icing is dry.

Step 4

After the bookworm body had time to dry, add the eyeglass frames with black icing. Let that set for about 5 minutes, then fill the eyeglass middles with white icing. Then add little dots for eyes with black icing.

If your light green icing went over the mouth outline, just go over it again with the dark green piping icing.

Step 5

Lastly, add the apple finishing details. Add a stem with brown piping icing. Then with a leaf tip (I used a #67 tip) add a leaf accent with leaf green stiff icing.

Video Tutorial

The steps above are summarized in this time-lapsed video I put together.

These apple bookworm cookies were fun to make, along with the two other designs I included in this the batch: notebook paper hearts, and stubby pencils. The stubby pencils were made using Sweet Sugarbelle's templates that were included in the kit.

Along with the Shape Shifter kit, Callye also has additional cutters and cookie decorating supplies that are sold separately. Be on the lookout for the Sweet Sugarbelle collection at your nearest Michaels!
