Geeky Baby Shower for Jennifer from NoYoMoCo
Recently, one of my very favorite dessert bloggers gave birth to her first child. Jennifer from Not Your Momma's Cookie (NoYoMoCo for short) is super talented and humorously witty. These are just a few reasons why I love her blog. The main reason: Jennifer is a fan of awesome things geeky and has a gift for incorporating them into desserts.
You might remember earlier this year I helped Jennifer announce to the blogosphere the gender of her little one via these Super Mario Bros. gender reveal cookies. Well little Seraphina Noelle came in to this world a few weeks ago, so I joined the ranks of a few cookiers to help celebrate this joyous occasion in the most proper way possible-- a Geeky Baby Shower!
The Hunger Games Baby Shower Cookies
Jennifer and I both share a love for the science-fiction trilogy, The Hunger Games. Just check out her take on cookie-fying the series with these Mockingjay pin cookies and these arrow cookie pops. With the next movie installment, Catching Fire, coming out in theaters today, I wanted to pay a geeky tribute to this science-fiction series in honor of lil' NoYoMoCo Seraphina.
Here is my set of Hunger Games baby shower-themed cookies.
For those of you unfamiliar with the novel, these cookies might need a little explanation. The heroine, Katniss, is torn between two males in this story. These onesies depict a choice Seraphina could wear to show who she's rooting for that day. Peeta, the boy with the bread. Or Gale, Katniss' childhood hunting partner.
The rattle has the emblem of District 12, the coal-mining district that Katniss is from. The crib mobile hangs parachute gifts from sponsors. Think of them as little bonuses dropped in during the Hunger Games to aid a tribute in need.
This last cookie is my favorite in the set and was the most challenging for me to make. You might have seen the mockingjay pin on book covers and on movie theater posters. I modified the mockingjay into a baby-carrying stork. I just had to add long legs, stretch out the neck, and add a baby in a sack.
The challenging part for me was painting with food coloring to add some shadowy dimension. I had a few issues with the royal icing pitting under each brush stroke and controlling the amount of color I applied, but eventually I got the hang of it after the third cookie attempt. I could definitely use more practice, but I'm not sure I'd be up for painting on cookies again any time soon. :)
Jennifer, I hope you enjoyed this virtual baby shower set just as much as I enjoyed making them. I know life with a newborn can be rough, so as they say in the novel, "may the odds be ever in your favor." (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
